Dear Anthony, Following is our Club News, Recent Results, Upcoming Events and Important Dates for this month – |

Club NewsOsu Karateka and Families,
We are well and truly in the swing of things. I hope you all had a Great Easter and a belated Happy Mothers Day to all the Mums. It’s an exciting time of year for our Karate Training. With the cooler weather, we are stepping up our training for the Kata tournament, June Junior Grading and November Senior Grading. Senior Grading preparation starts now! Don’t wait till it’s too late.
Chocolate Fundraiser results will be in shortly. We are just waiting on a couple of late returns. Based on money brought in so far, the Chocolate Fundraiser has been an amazing success. That is due entirely to all your hard work and initiative. Whether you sold 1 box or 5 (yes 5 !!!), a massive THANK YOU! to all for your contribution.
Easter Hamper winner is Luke Obaid. I haven’t seen any of the chocolates in the dojo, so I assume Luke has eaten them all. What a great hamper. I hope it was enjoyed.
Election Day Sausage Sizzle. No, this is not Déjà vu. It’s the federal election this time round!. BBQ will start 8am at KKC Five Dock dojo and finish approx 4 pm this Saturday 18thMay. We had an amazing turn out of helpers and supporters last time round. Your help this time will be much appreciated again. Especially the kids and young adults! They did an amazing job selling and making for a fun atmosphere. Please come along and help out for an hour or so or just come along, cast your vote, buy a sausage and have a chat. I look forward to seeing everyone there in some shape or form this Saturday.
Make up Classes. Just a reminder, due to the dojo being used as a polling booth, ALL SATURDAY classes are cancelled for 18thMay 2019. Make up classes for Kinder through to Kids are available on: Sunday 19th May 10.30am Kinder through to 6-12 yrs and Wednesday 22nd May Kinder 4pm, Kids 6-8 yrs 4.30pm and Kids 9-12yrs 5.45pm.
Return and Earn bottle recycling. Wow, another amazing success. We have already raised over $100.00 and sent over 5 large garbage bins of bottles back for recycling. There is a hot contest between the De Cristo family and the Fabi family but all contributors are acknowledged. This is a great initiative that not only raises money for the IFK Australia but also helps our environment by keeping recyclable bottles out of our landfill. Keep the bottles coming in and watch this space for more updates. |

Over the coming months, we will include a brief interpretation of what each belt colour means. This month we will begin where we all begin, with White Belt.
White Belt White belt (Shiro Obi) is the symbol of purity, at least in the English and Japanese based cultures. The new white belt student might be described as pure, being completely ignorant of the requirements of the art. The purity is lost as soon as the first exercise is performed in the dojo. The pristine colour is gone forever through sweat and dust, and the journey through the colour spectrum begins. There is no shame in being a white belt and the instructor, more than the others, is aware of this because he or she too was one once.
In the Honbu dojo in Japan, while under Mas Oyama, the tradition was that uchi-deshi(live-in or full-time students) wear white belts and would shave their heads as a sign of their dedication. The third year uchi-deshi, newly graduated blackbelts, also did this to indicate humility, symbolising the return to the spirit of a beginner
